The 2013 CMA Awards were filled with singing and dancing and everything great at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville last night. The show kicked off with a performance by Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line who were on tour together over the summer. They were just a couple of the amazing performers last night. One of the best parts of the show, for the sixth year in a row, was the hosting by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. They poked fun at the Zac Brown/Luke Bryan “feud” (they hugged it out so crisis averted!), the Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus VMA performance, and plenty of other things as well. Brad even dressed in the pin stripe suit later on in the show! These two hosts were hilarious as usual but they were just one part of the amazing show.
Another part that really stood out was Luke Bryan’s performance of “Drink A Beer” dedicated to his brother and sister who passed away. Although this song is about drinking a beer, something that some people might not consider nostalgic or touching, Luke managed to make this a perfect tribute to his brother and sister. Another tribute that had people bawling was the one to George Jones. Some other performances included a duet between Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert (AKA the most perfect duet ever) singing “We Were Us”, Kacey Musgraves singing “Follow Your Arrow”, Tim McGraw singing “Southern Girl” and of course many others. One performance that stuck out, and perhaps for not the best reasons, was Hunter Hayes and Jason Mraz singing “Everybody’s Got Somebody But Me”. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great performance, but everyone had to have noticed in the very beginning when Jason Mraz forgot to sing his line, or chose not to or whatever other reason there could be. Hunter got it back on track though and it was of course great.
One of my favorite parts, maybe just because I love Nashville, was when Connie Britton and Charles Esten presented an award. Seeing different faces from the show at the real CMA Awards was really great and Connie and Charles joking about Connie winning the awards was really funny, even if they were reading from a screen. Everyone also got a glimpse of Chris Carmack for a few seconds and then of course the performance by Lennon and Maisy Stella, singing “You Belong With Me”, for the introduction of Taylor Swift’s Pinnacle Award.
One award that was given was the Pinnacle Award to Taylor Swift for taking country music to a worldwide audience. The only other winner was Garth Brooks in 2005. Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, George Strait, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban and Brad Paisley presented Taylor Swift with this award, as they have all had her tour with them when she was just a teenager. They also showed a video of stars like Julia Roberts, Justin Timberlake, Ellen DeGeneres, Mick Jagger and others congratulating her. She said her thank you’s, told the story about when she got the call to open for Rascal Flatts when she was 16 because “Eric Church got fired for playing too long”, pointed out her crying parents, and, well, got her award.
Of course the point of the whole show is for the awards (I know what you’re thinking…it’s not for swooning over these beautiful stars?!) so let’s get to the winners! Everyone’s favorite country couple, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, managed to take home the awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year for the fourth year in a row! Blake also took home the CMA for Album of the Year for “Based on a True Story”. Another duo that walked away with 2 awards was Florida Georgia Line, who won Single of the Year for “Cruise” and Vocal Duo of the Year. Also winning 2 CMA Awards was “Highway Don’t Care” by Tim McGraw with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban for Musical Event of the Year and Music Video of the Year so congrats to those 3 artists! For the second year in a row, Little Big Town snagged the Vocal Group of the Year award. Kacey Musgraves, who received a whopping 6 nominations, took home the award for New Artist of the Year. Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary took home the award for Song of the Year for “I Drive Your Truck”, sung by Lee Brice, and Mac McAnally won the award for Musician of the Year. Of course the biggest award is always Entertainer of the Year and this year it went to one of the biggest country stars, George Strait, and deservingly so. I’m sure everyone can agree that all of these country singers and musicians are incredible and they all deserved what they got so congrats to them!
